Ukraine has expressed readiness to begin exporting food to Syria if the Middle Eastern country requires such supplies, Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Vitalii Koval stated in a comment to Reuters on December 13.
“Ukraine, a global producer and exporter of grains and oilseeds, is prepared to supply food to Syria following the removal of Bashar al-Assad,” Koval said.
According to Reuters, Russian and Syrian sources previously reported that shipments of Russian wheat to Syria had been halted due to uncertainties surrounding the new government and payment delays.
Syria, which imported food from Russia during Assad's rule, now faces an unclear future regarding its relations with Moscow under a new administration.
“Where there is hardship, we must be there with our food. We are open to supplying food, and if Syria needs it, we will stand ready,” Koval assured.
Previously, global leaders gathered in Kyiv for the 3rd Annual Grain from Ukraine Summit, where Ukraine reaffirmed its commitment to combating global hunger.
