Russian State Duma Deputy Dmitry Gusev has proposed issuing a commemorative coin featuring the Oreshnik ballistic missile system, aligning the initiative with the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

The proposal has been formally submitted to the head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina.

According to Gusev on April 8, the coin is intended to serve as a symbol of the continuity between historical military traditions and modern defense technologies.

He stated that the depiction of Oreshnik could enhance public interest in military and technological progress and reinforce patriotic values.

“This coin will serve as a bridge between the heroes of the past and the engineers of the future,” Gusev said.

The Central Bank of Russia has already released a series of commemorative coins dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

These include silver coins with face values of 3 and 100 rubles, gold coins of 50 and 10,000 rubles, and a large circulation of 50-ruble coins made of base metals. Designs on these coins feature wartime imagery such as Soviet soldiers raising the flag over the Reichstag and scenes of victory celebrations.

What Is the Oreshnik missile?

The Oreshnik is a Russian medium-range ballistic missile system. Russia first used the missile operationally on November 21, 2023, in a strike targeting the Yuzhmash plant in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. The missile was equipped with multiple decoy warheads and did not contain any explosive payload. The attack did not result in significant damage.

The use of decoy warheads suggests the Oreshnik may be designed to test or evade missile defense systems, indicating its role within Russia’s broader strategic capabilities. While full technical specifications have not been disclosed, its deployment has drawn attention as part of Russia’s evolving military tactics.
