Ukraine Unveils Debris of Russia’s New Oreshnik ICBM After Dnipro Attack
On November 24, 2024, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) revealed fragments of the newly developed Russian Oreshnik Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which struck the city of Dnipro on November 21. The missile debris, discovered and seized by SBU investigators, was displayed to journalists from Associated Press (AP).
The Oreshnik, based on the Russian RS-26 “Rubezh” intercontinental ballistic missile, remains under investigation, according to the SBU. The fragments, including charred and damaged wires, as well as a casing the size of a large winter tire, were shown to the press before being taken for further analysis.
The missile, which can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads, was launched from Russia’s Kapustin Yar missile test site in the Astrakhan region. The rocket traveled for 15 minutes, reaching a peak speed of 11 Machs before hitting Dnipro. The missile carried six warheads, each containing six submunitions.
This marks the first time such missile debris has been found on Ukrainian territory. The SBU has confirmed the ongoing investigation into the incident, as they work to determine the full details of the attack.
On November 21, 2024, Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile strike against Ukraine, hitting Dnipro. The missile, believed to be an RS-26 Rubezh, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, likely carried a non-nuclear payload for demonstration purposes. The missile’s range is estimated at 6,000 km, and it was fired from Russia’s Astrakhan region.
