Don’t Forget Your Own Path: Belgium FM Calls Out EU States Blocking Ukraine’s Membership

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has called on European countries delaying Ukraine’s accession to the European Union to remember their own past struggles and the help they once received from others, speaking at a joint press conference in Odesa alongside his counterparts from Ukraine, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, Ukrainian media outlet Ukrinform reported on August 26.
Prévot stated that Ukraine should not be held “hostage” to the national interests of reluctant member states.
Today in Odesa, I had the honor of welcoming my colleagues, Foreign Ministers of Belgium @PrevotMaxime, Luxembourg @Xavier_Bettel and the Netherlands @DutchMFA Director General for European Cooperation Heleen Bakker.

“We hope that those European countries that are complicating Ukraine’s path to a European future will understand: at one time, they too needed help from others. Some of us have forgotten our own history. But they should not forget what others did for them. And if their countries had once held others hostage to their national interests, perhaps today they would not be who they are. Do not forget this,” Prévot said.
Addressing Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha directly, he added that he dreams of one day celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day in a peaceful Kyiv.
“That day will come, I am sure. And then we will celebrate not only Ukraine’s independence, but also its European future,” Belgium’s top diplomat stressed.
Earlier, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced that Belgium will contribute $160 million to support Ukraine’s air defense against Russian attacks.
