EU Condemns Murder of Ukrainian Journalist Viktoria Roshchyna in Russian Captivity

The European Commission has condemned the killing of Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna, whose body, bearing signs of torture, was recently returned to Ukraine.
Speaking at a press briefing in Brussels on April 30, European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper described the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by Ukrainians under occupation, Ukrinform reports.
“Russia continues to reveal the depths of its cruelty through torture, executions, and repression,” Hipper said. “Viktoria Roshchyna, a courageous journalist committed to the truth, was not only tortured but murdered for her work. Her case clearly shows that life under Russian occupation remains a constant threat to Ukrainians.”
She added: “Her bravery will not be forgotten. The European Union will pursue every avenue to ensure that the Russian Federation is held fully accountable for its war crimes and atrocities.”
Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) and civilian captives held by Russian authorities have been subjected to torture, enforced disappearance, and prolonged incommunicad detention. The human rights organization describes these actions as violations of international law, amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Earlier, an international investigation found that the body of Viktoria Roshchyna was returned to Ukraine with several internal organs missing, possibly to obscure the true cause of death.
