France Discusses More Missiles and Mirage Jets for Ukraine—and Takes Aim at Russia’s Shadow Fleet

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said he held talks with the French Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, on January 28, focusing on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, aviation capabilities, and efforts to counter Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of sanctioned oil tankers.
In a Telegram post, Fedorov thanked France for its long-standing cooperation and contributions to protecting Ukrainian airspace, noting that the partnership is already delivering tangible results.
Every article pushes back against disinformation. Your support keeps our team in the field.
“We are counting on ammunition supplies from France—both for the SAMP/T and Crotale air defense systems and for long-range weapons. I am grateful for your willingness to transfer additional French-made missiles in the near future,” Fedorov wrote.
France previously planned to deploy its next-generation SAMP/T NG air defense system to Ukraine as soon as it enters service.
The talks also addressed the transfer of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine. “We are expecting additional aircraft deliveries, which will significantly strengthen our capabilities in the air,” Fedorov wrote.
Mirage 2000 planes have proven remarkably effective in the hands of the Ukrainian Air Force. A Ukrainian fighter pilot flying the French Mirage 2000 has earlier reported a 98% success rate in intercepting Russian drones and missiles.

Fedorov further welcomed France’s firm stance on restricting Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
“I noted France’s principled position on restricting the activities of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet.’ Reducing the enemy’s resources is a key factor in reducing its ability to finance the war,” he stated.
Fedorov added that he invited Vautrin to visit Ukraine and expressed readiness to deepen cooperation, including in data exchange and joint analytical work, thanking France for its continued support and leadership.
Previously, it was reported that the French Navy had successfully boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, which was suspected of flying a false flag and violating international sanctions as a part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. France had also detained the captain of said vessel.
