German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil assured Kyiv that Berlin will provide €9 billion annually from the federal budget to support Ukraine in the coming years. Klingbeil, visiting Kyiv on August 25, also said Germany is ready to contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine, DW reported on August 25.

“For over three and a half years of this war, we have consistently stood with the Ukrainian people. This applies to security guarantees as well,” he told journalists.

However, Klingbeil did not give a direct answer when asked about potential Bundeswehr involvement in a peacekeeping mission on Ukrainian territory. Some political parties in Germany have already opposed deploying troops as part of security guarantees, DW stated.

The vice chancellor highlighted the need to strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces and increase domestic weapons production, enabling the country not only to defend itself but also to deter potential aggression. He added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must now show genuine interest in a sustainable and just peace.

Previously, it was reported that German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil reaffirmed Germany’s steadfast support for Ukraine on Monday during an unannounced visit to Kyiv, according to a report by Reuters.
