Norway has announced a contribution of around 7 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately 685 million dollars) to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. The funding, together with Germany, will cover the purchase of two American-made Patriot systems for Ukraine.

According to the Norwegian government, the decision follows a meeting earlier this summer between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, where both sides agreed to cooperate on the transfer.

The systems are currently stationed in Germany and are expected to be delivered to Ukraine as soon as possible.

The United States has confirmed it will replace the Patriot systems provided to Ukraine, while Norway has committed to financing their restoration.

In addition to the Patriot systems, Norway is also supporting the procurement of German-made TRML-4D air defense radars from Hensoldt and Typhon-2 systems from Norway’s Kongsberg.

Germany has already funded contracts for TRML-4D radars and Kongsberg systems for Ukraine, while earlier this month Berlin approved an additional package of military equipment and ammunition worth 500 million dollars.

According to the Norwegian Ministry of Defense, this latest contribution amounts to 590 million euros and is part of broader cooperation with Germany aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

“Together with Germany, we are now ensuring that Ukraine receives powerful air defense systems. Our countries are working closely to help Ukraine defend its territory and protect civilians from Russian air attacks,” Prime Minister Støre said.

Earlier, on August 1, Germany announced it would fast-track two additional Patriot systems to Ukraine under a swap deal with the United States, allowing Berlin to receive newly produced batteries on an accelerated timeline in return.
