Ukraine may have struck the Russian Navy’s Caspian Flotilla flagship Tatarstan during an overnight attack on the city of Kaspiysk in Russia’s Dagestan region, according to the Ukrainian OSINT project Exilenova+ on September 11.

The analysts published a satellite image that they said may show damage to the vessel following the attack. Tatarstan is a Project 11661K Gepard-class patrol ship that entered service in 2003 and serves as the flagship of Russia’s Caspian Flotilla.

The vessel was designed for patrol and maritime security missions, as well as operations against surface ships, submarines, and aerial targets. Its armament includes the Uran anti-ship missile system, the Osa-MA short-range surface-to-air missile system, artillery, and anti-submarine weapons.

Project 11661 vessels were also designed with measures intended to reduce their radar signature. The reported strike has not been independently confirmed, and Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed damage to the Tatarstan.

The possible attack came during a broader series of Ukrainian strikes against targets inside Russia on September 11. Explosions and fires were also reported in Saratov and Volgograd, including at an oil refinery, an Ozon logistics facility, and an industrial site.

In May, Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces struck a Russian Project 10410 Svetlyak-class patrol ship in Kaspiisk, Dagestan, nearly 1,000 kilometers from the front line. Footage released by SBS showed an FP-1 strike drone hitting the vessel near its stern.

Kaspiisk hosts the headquarters of Russia’s Caspian Flotilla and has increasingly come under Ukrainian long-range drone attacks targeting Russian naval assets in the region.
