Germany to Allocate Additional €65 Million for Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure
Germany will additionally allocate €65 million for the repair of Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection stated.
This financial aid will be directed to the "Ukraine Energy Support Fund", which was established to counteract the impact of the Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure.
"Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure continues to be a target of Russia's massive airstrikes. A collapse in energy supply during the third winter of the war would have catastrophic consequences for Ukraine's economy and population. Supporting Ukraine is more critical than ever," said German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck.
By the end of 2023, the German government had already contributed over €155 million to the Energy Support Fund. With this, Germany's total contribution will rise to €360 million by the end of 2024, making it the largest contributor to the fund.
Since mid-November, widespread power outages have resumed across Ukraine. Initially, these outages were emergency and preventive measures in response to the threat of Russia’s strikes on the energy sector. However, following a massive attack on November 17, the country returned to scheduled electricity blackouts nationwide.
On November 4, Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, announced a €200 million humanitarian assistance package for Ukraine, which aims to support Ukrainians through the winter.
