Germany Unveils HX-2 ‘Mini-Taurus’ Drones With Swarm Coordination Technology for Ukraine
Germany has introduced the HX-2 attack drones by Helsing, a cutting-edge loitering munition that will enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, according to Defense Express. With an order of 4,000 units, these drones are designed to counter a range of military targets, including armored vehicles and artillery, at extended distances.
Features and capabilities
The HX-2, referred to by some as “mini-Taurus,” offers advanced functionality and performance comparable to the American Switchblade and Russian Lancet systems. The drone can operate at a range of up to 100 kilometers and reach speeds of 220 km/h. Weighing 12 kilograms, it features a payload capacity of several kilograms, capable of carrying a cumulative warhead or other types of explosives.
The drone’s design includes an X-wing configuration and tail assembly, powered by four electric motors with pulling propellers—an unusual setup compared to conventional drones with single push motors.
Artificial intelligence integration
The key innovation of the HX-2 lies in its advanced combat artificial intelligence. Equipped with “machine vision” technology, the drone can autonomously detect, identify, and track targets. It also incorporates a “human-in-the-loop” principle, requiring operator confirmation before engaging a target. This AI-driven capability ensures precision and effectiveness even in environments with active electronic warfare countermeasures.
Additionally, the HX-2 integrates seamlessly into Helsing’s Altra system, which supports swarm attacks by coordinating multiple drones.
Helsing has emphasized that the HX-2 is optimized for mass production at reduced costs. The company has already increased its production capacity across Europe and confirmed that its base software is currently in use in Ukraine.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz inspected advanced AI-powered defense systems in Kyiv, including drones, FPV models, and robotic complexes.
The exhibition showcased domestically produced equipment and German-Ukrainian collaborations, highlighting innovations such as computer vision and automatic targeting systems. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of this cooperation in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
