Germany Unveils Rolls-Royce-Powered Condor Fire Support and Anti-Drone Platform

German armored vehicle maker Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) has presented a new combat-vehicle concept called Condor that combines direct fire support with short-range air defense, built on a modernized Leopard 1 chassis and fitted with a Rolls-Royce powerpack, according to ArmyInform on January 13.
ArmyInform said the vehicle was first shown publicly at the DSEI defense and security exhibition in London. The Condor mounts an unmanned Turra 30-SA turret from EVPÚ, armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon and designed to engage low-flying aerial threats as well as ground targets.

FFG said mobility upgrades center on replacing the legacy Leopard 1 drivetrain with a Rolls-Royce Power Systems 8V199TE23 eight-cylinder diesel rated up to 1,080 horsepower, paired with a modified ZF 4 HP 250 automatic gearbox and a new two-circuit cooling system, according to ArmyInform.
The turret’s dual-feed ammunition system allows rapid switching between types of rounds, including programmable airburst munitions intended for use against drones, the report said.

The Condor is 7.18 meters long, 3.41 meters wide and 3.05 meters high, with a combat weight of less than 40 tonnes, ArmyInform reported. The vehicle features added side and roof armor, a digital onboard network, and a crew layout that seats the commander and driver side by side to improve coordination.
Secondary armament options include a coaxial machine gun and either Spike or Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles, while integrated sensors include a multifunction radar, electro-optics and systems intended to detect incoming fire.

However, Defense Express argued the project appears driven largely by FFG’s ambition to enter the market for armored vehicles with firepower, noting the company until recently had mainly marketed engineering vehicles.
The outlet added that Condor’s “multi-role” positioning is primarily tied to the turret’s capabilities, which it said would remain the same regardless of the chassis used.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine would receive Skyranger 35 short-range air-defense systems mounted on Leopard 1 chassis, financed by an EU member state using frozen Russian assets.
