Hungary has come out against the European Union’s proposal to create a $108 billion fund aimed at supporting Ukraine, claiming the initiative would amount to “financing war.”

The statement came from Balázs Orbán, an advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, via a Facebook on July 9.

“Europe is out of money—unless it’s for war. Then there’s always $108 billion,” he wrote, criticizing Brussels’ approach to continued support for Ukraine.

According to Orbán, such funding would come at the expense of European priorities—undermining the continent’s competitiveness, weakening border protection, and diverting resources away from citizens, families, and local communities.

He also claimed without evidence that Ukraine had requested as much as approximately $1.08 trillion, warning that the proposed fund would only be the beginning.

“At a time when Europe is struggling with economic, social, and security challenges, Brussels keeps choosing weapons over peace, debt over a competitive Europe,” Orbán added. “There’s always money to spend in Brussels—just not on Europe.”

Earlier, Hungary vetoed a proposed $21 billion EU military aid package for Ukraine, deepening the bloc’s efforts to maintain support for Kyiv.
