US Senator Lindsey Graham warned that President Donald Trump risks being drawn into futile peace talks with Russia unless Washington increases pressure on the Kremlin, including by supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles if Moscow continues to reject efforts to end the war, NBC News reported on December 21.

Speaking in an NBC interview, Graham said negotiations led by the United States, Ukraine, and European partners had produced a framework that could halt the fighting without forcing Russia out of all occupied territory, but would include strong security guarantees to prevent another invasion.

“I want a deal that would prevent the third invasion, i want European troops on the ground to make sure there’s no third invasion, i want us to give security gurantees to Ukraine,” Graham said.

“I think that Putin will continue to take the Donbas by force until we increase the pressure,” he continued.

According to Graham, Russia has repeatedly rebuffed peace efforts, raising doubts about whether Putin intends to end the war at all.

Graham argued that if Moscow again refuses a deal, the US must “dramatically change the game.” He urged Trump to back his legislation imposing tariffs on countries, such as China, buying discounted Russian oil and designate Russia a state sponsor of terrorism over the abduction of Ukrainian children, as well as authorizing the seizurure of tankers carrying sanctioned Russian crude oil.

“If Putin says no, we need to dramatically change the game, including giving Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to hit the drone and missile factories that exist in Russia. I would go all in if Putin says no,” Graham stressed.

Without such steps, Graham warned, the US risks playing “Lucy with the football,” repeatedly engaging Putin only to see negotiations fail.

Previously, it was reported that the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved a bipartisan bill that would officially designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism if it fails to return thousands of Ukrainian children abducted from occupied Ukrainian territories.
