A statistics by the Department of Emergency Situations of Kharkiv City Council details the extent of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian city in August 2024. Throughout the month, the city endured 213 air raid alarms, amounting to 379.5 hours of heightened air raid threat. The period was marked by 29 credible threats of shelling, which resulted in 11 confirmed shelling incidents.

On August 30, Russia launched a guided aerial bomb attack on Kharkiv, resulting in killing at least 6 people, including a 14-year-old girl, and injuring 97.

Russia attacks civilian infrastructure during plain day, often employing “double-tap” strikes, where a second attack follows shortly after the first to target first responders, which is considered a war crime. In recent attacks on Kharkiv, employees of the State Emergency Service (DSNS) and ambulance workers who arrived on the scene were also injured.

The targeted infrastructure include a shopping center, a sports facility, and residential buildings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that “all necessary global forces must be mobilized to stop this terror.” “This requires not extraordinary forces, but sufficient courage from leaders — the courage to provide Ukraine with everything necessary for its defense,” the President said.
