Italian PM: Security Guarantees for Ukraine Must Be Implemented Within NATO Framework

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is only possible with adequate security guarantees, which should be implemented within NATO.
According to ANSA on February 26, speaking after a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Rome, Meloni stated that security guarantees are essential to prevent a recurrence of the war and to ensure that European nations facing potential threats feel secure.
“I have always said, and believe, that these security guarantees must be implemented within the context of the Atlantic Alliance because I think that this is the best framework to guarantee a peace that is neither fragile nor temporary, so that there is no longer the risk that Europe could fall back into the drama of war,” she said.
Meloni also noted that alternative security arrangements appear more complex and, in her view, less effective: “The other solutions, as I have already said, seem to me to be more complex and frankly less effective.”
Earlier, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Italy is willing to participate in a potential international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, emphasizing the country’s longstanding role in such operations, according to ANSA.
