Japanese technology firm Terra Drone Corporation has entered Ukraine’s defense tech sector through an investment in local developer Amazing Drones, aiming to scale production of interceptor drones, according to a UNITED24 Media correspondent present at the company’s press conference in Kyiv on March 31.

The event featured Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige, Amazing Drones CEO Maksym Klymenko, and representatives of Ukraine’s defense tech cluster Brave1.

The partnership is focused on expanding the serial manufacturing of low-cost aerial interceptors designed to counter threats such as Shahed-type attack drones. The agreement is being executed via Terra Drone’s subsidiary Terra Inspectioneering, while financial details remain undisclosed.

Production and development are expected to remain in Ukraine for now, with potential international expansion dependent on future export approvals.

Amazing Drones’ interceptor systems are built for frontline conditions, including electronic warfare and signal disruption. The drones can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h, operate within a range of roughly 32 km, and remain airborne for about 15 minutes—allowing a single unit to detect and engage aerial targets within one mission cycle.

Both companies are placing emphasis on advancing autonomy in interceptor systems. The current development focus includes automated launch, independent navigation toward targets, and interception without continuous operator input.

“For us, it is very important to expand our technological capabilities and bring the product to the stage we are aiming for—automatic launch, target acquisition, and interception,” said Maksym Klymenko, CEO of Amazing Drones.

According to Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige, interceptor drones offer a more cost-effective approach to air defense compared to traditional missile systems.

“A Shahed may cost tens of thousands of dollars, while a missile can cost over a million. Interceptors can operate at a fraction of that cost,” Tokushige said.

The cooperation combines Ukraine’s rapid, combat-driven development cycles with Terra Drone’s experience in mass production and international market expansion. The partners also aim to further develop autonomous interceptor capabilities, a segment that remains limited in global deployment.

Terra Drone, headquartered in Japan, operates across multiple sectors including industrial drones and unmanned traffic management systems. Amazing Drones is a Ukrainian defense-tech company specializing in FPV and interceptor drones, including systems such as HUMMEL and SkyRider.

Earlier, according to Kyodo News on February 20, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready to deepen defense cooperation with Japan, including sharing combat-proven technologies such as sea drones and interceptor UAVs, which have been used to push Russia’s fleet away from the Black Sea and counter aerial threats.
