US Vice President JD Vance has suggested that the United States may eventually reconsider its role in supporting Ukraine if Russia continues to avoid meaningful engagement in peace negotiations.

“We realize that there is a bit of an impasse in talks over the war in Ukraine,” Vance said, as quoted by Clash Report on X.

“Putin doesn't seem to quite know how to get out of the war. If Russia is not willing to engage, eventually the US has to say that this is not our war.”

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on May 19, followed by separate calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key NATO allies.

Trump said the call with Putin is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Washington time (5:00 p.m. Kyiv time) and will focus on efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome on May 18, ahead of the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.
