Trump Considers Direct Talks With Putin to Solve War in Ukraine, CNN Reports

Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia may involve direct contact between the leaders of the United States and Russia, US President Donald Trump said while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after departing Abu Dhabi, CNN reported on May 15.
Trump stated that he “may” call Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“We have to meet. We will meet with him,” Trump said, referring to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. “I think we will solve this problem, and maybe not, but at least we will know. And if we don’t solve it, then it will be very interesting.”
Trump did not specify a timeline or format for a potential meeting.
Earlier, direct talks between Russia and Ukraine began in Istanbul, marking the first such negotiations since 2022.
Prior to the talks, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced that Ukraine is prepared for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as well as direct high-level peace negotiations with Russia, his statement followed a round of discussions in Istanbul with senior advisors to the leaders of the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
