North Korea’s Kim Il Sung University is set to establish a representative office in Novosibirsk’s Akademgorodok, in partnership with Novosibirsk State University (NSU), NSU announced on March 30.

The initiative aims to strengthen scientific and educational cooperation between Russia and North Korea, fostering joint research programs, student exchanges, and academic collaboration.

NSU is currently working with local authorities to address organizational matters, including finding a suitable location for the North Korean university’s branch.

According to the announcement, Kim Il Sung University is regarded as North Korea’s leading academic institution.

Additionally, NSU is in talks with North Korea to find a partner school for its prestigious physics and mathematics high school, to prepare North Korean students for admission to NSU.

In January, a delegation from Kim Il Sung University visited NSU, laying the groundwork for expanded collaboration. During the meeting, university leaders agreed to develop a strategic roadmap for their partnership over the next year.

Kim Sung Chan, the rector of Kim Il Sung University, emphasized the growing ties between Russia and North Korea, stating:

“In this historic period, traditional Korean-Russian friendship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership. We hope our universities will continue to expand cooperation at an even higher level, in line with the shared interests of our peoples.”

Meanwhile, NSU rector Mikhail Fedoruk highlighted Novosibirsk’s long-standing academic ties with North Korea and expressed eagerness to implement joint educational and scientific projects shortly.

The agreement comes as Russia deepens its cooperation with North Korea, which has provided military support to Moscow, including weapons shipments and, more recently, North Korean troops in combat zones.

Kim Il Sung University students have been invited to participate in NSU’s International Student Science Conference in April, as well as the Big Mathematical Workshop organized by Akademgorodok’s Mathematical Center.

NSU plans to send a delegation to Pyongyang in 2026 to take part in Kim Il Sung University’s 80th-anniversary international scientific conference.

Earlier, Students at a Chelyabinsk university marked the birthday of North Korea’s former leader, Kim Jong Il, in a gathering organized by the “Friendship Club with the DPRK.”
