Krasnodar Residents Protest Church Meant to Glorify Russia’s Ukraine War “Heroes”

More than 1,000 residents of the Yubileiny neighborhood in Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia, recorded an appeal to the Russian leader Vladimir Putin opposing plans for a 70-meter church complex honoring “heroes of the special military operation,” according to Meduza on December 15.
The outlet reported that protesters recorded the message and plan to submit it to Putin’s annual call-in show, scheduled for December 19, after earlier petitions and appeals to local officials failed to halt the project.

The residents vowed to continue their campaign, quoting one opponent as saying he planned “to fight right up to the bulldozers,” and reported that protesters chanted “Yubileiny against development!” and “Putin, help!” while expressing doubts their appeal would be aired.
The head of the Spas television channel , Boris Korchevnikov, described the gathering on Telegram as a “weak Krasnodar Maidan” and claimed it was organized by the Communist Party.

The outlet also reported that a city council deputy, Sergey Klimov, called opponents “traitorous scum” in a Telegram post promoting a separate pro-construction video appeal before canceling it on December 9, saying “foreign-agent media” and “undesirable organizations” had become involved.
Earlier, it was reported that the Russian Orthodox Church pushed to massively expand military clergy to serve troops at the front and framed this as essential to Russia’s war effort.
