A man has been arrested in Riga on charges of spying for Russia and passing on classified information about Latvian military facilities and NATO presence.

According to Delfi on September 17, Latvia’s State Security Service (SGB) detained the suspect on August 27. He is accused of illegally collecting and transferring sensitive information to Russian intelligence, and a criminal case has been opened.

Investigators say the man provided details about the location and planning of military sites, security systems and ongoing construction projects, troop training, and the presence of NATO forces stationed in Latvia. The SGB noted that this intelligence could have been used to undermine the security of Latvia and other Baltic states.

Searches were carried out at four properties in Riga and its outskirts connected to the suspect. Security officers seized data carriers and documents, which are now undergoing forensic examination.

The suspect has been remanded in custody while the investigation continues.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia sharply intensified its espionage and hybrid operations in Germany, with the number of suspicious incidents almost doubling over the past year.
