Lithuania Boosts Border Security Ahead of Russian-Belarusian “Zapad-2025” Military Drills

Lithuania will strengthen protection of its state border ahead of the joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises “Zapad-2025,” the country’s State Border Guard Service (VSAT) announced, according to LRT on August 20.
“All the measures that are planned carry a certain level of secrecy. This is not public information. I can only assure you that our service, as well as other services of the Ministry of the Interior, are ready,” Liubajevas stated.
He explained that an approved plan of measures had already been put in place, outlining joint actions by the border guard, police, and other services, including the public security service and VSAT.
According to Liubajevas, Lithuania has long been preparing for these drills, and border guards will now operate in reinforced mode.

“The main task during these exercises is to prevent various provocations and violations of the state border. The services will act in such a way as to stop any unlawful actions along the border with the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation,” he said.
The border service is also preparing for different types of threats. Liubajevas noted that potential scenarios could include violations of the state border, the use of technical military equipment across the frontier, or destabilizing situations inside the country, such as groups of migrants. He stressed that Lithuania is prepared for any development and does not rule out any possible options.
Earlier, it was reported that first train carrying Russian troops and military equipment had arrived in the country ahead of the joint strategic exercises “Zapad-2025.” Scheduled for September, the drills are described as the main phase of this year’s military cooperation between Russia and Belarus, with forces from both nations now completing the final stage of preparations.
