Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden called for the formation of a European army, voicing concerns that Donald Trump’s potential return to office could weaken Europe’s security guarantees.

According to The Telegraph, in a recent speech in Poland, Frieden proposed that initial steps could be made by a “coalition of the willing” among EU nations, suggesting a force aligned with NATO and in cooperation with North American allies.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine served as a wake-up call,” Frieden stated, underscoring the need for Europe to strengthen its own institutions to protect democratic principles. He emphasized that recent global threats demand a reassessment of Europe’s collective defense approach.

European leaders are reportedly anxious about the possibility that Trump might reduce US military commitments to NATO or curtail support for Ukraine, putting EU security at risk.

Since 2022, the proposal to form a European army has gained traction, notably from France, where President Emmanuel Macron has advocated for increased European autonomy in defense.

However, Baltic states remain cautious, fearing that an EU force might weaken NATO, a concern previously echoed by the UK during its time in the EU.

Frieden acknowledged the complexity of forming a unified military force, advocating for gradual steps that respect national sovereignty. “While each nation will retain control over key military decisions, we must begin integrating our defense capabilities to strengthen our security,” he concluded, encouraging Europe to prepare for a coordinated defense framework that addresses emerging threats.

Earlier, Donald Trump declared victory in the US Presidential election during a rally in Florida on November 6, as reported by Sky News. Expressing gratitude, he stated, “Thank you to the American people for electing me as the 47th president. I will fight every day for a strong, prosperous America, ushering in a golden era.” Trump also announced Republican control of the Senate and likely the House of Representatives.
