Meloni stated that rather than the West taking further initiatives, it is Russia that must show a willingness to cooperate.
"Regarding Putin at the G20 summit, I believe that right now we should ask Putin to take a few steps forward, and not take them ourselves," Meloni said.
The Prime Minister noted that Washington has already made several attempts to engage with Moscow in recent months without seeing a meaningful response. She emphasized that the burden of action now lies with the Russian side.
"We and the Americans, especially during the last months, have made, let's say, several steps toward Russia, and on the other hand, we did not see as many steps in response. I believe that right now is the time to demand them from Russia," Meloni stated.
The Russian Foreign Ministry recently claimed to have received a high-level invitation to the summit. Additionally, Russia’s G20 representative, Svetlana Lukash, mentioned that the American presidency is preparing for the potential arrival of the Russian leader.

President Donald Trump clarified to journalists that he has not invited Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, scheduled for December 2026 at his Doral golf club in Miami. However, the US President noted that the Russian leader's participation "could be useful" for diplomatic discussions.
These remarks follow recent claims from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which suggested that Moscow had already received an official invitation to the Florida summit. As the event approaches, the question of Russia's involvement remains a central point of international debate.
