Russian Lieutenant General Sergei Milchakov, who commanded forces involved in the capture of several settlements in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, may have been killed in a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military headquarters in temporarily occupied Donetsk in late August, independent Russian outlet Vazhnye Istorii reported on September 14.

He had previously commanded the formation and was reportedly involved in operations that led to the Russian capture of Avdiivka, New York , and other settlements in the Donetsk region.

On September 14, several Russian pro-war bloggers and propagandists reported the death of a Russian military figure they described as a “Hero of Russia,” but did not publicly identify the individual by name.

The reports have also led to confusion over the identity of the person reportedly killed. Some Russian Telegram channels claimed that Alexei Milchakov, the head of the Rusich sabotage and assault group, had been killed. Vazhnye Istorii, however, reported that he may have been confused with Sergei Milchakov.

The reported death of the Russian lieutenant general has still not been officially confirmed.

If confirmed, Milchakov would become the 23rd Russian general reported killed during Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to the outlet.

The reports come days after Russia confirmed the death of another senior military officer who had participated in the war against Ukraine. Colonel Andrei Vladimirovich Krestyansky, a senior Russian Defense Ministry officer, was reported killed by the OSINT project Killed in Ukraine, which monitors Russian officer losses.

His death was also confirmed by authorities in the Marks municipal district of Russia’s Saratov region, according to Militarnyi. An official notice said Krestyansky had participated in Russia’s war against Ukraine and was killed while carrying out military duties.
