A Ukrainian assault unit has neutralized a Russian command post near the border with Russia, resulting in the confirmed death of a senior Russian officer.

According to Militarnyi on June 18, the operation was carried out by the 225th Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the village of Andriivka in Sumy region, approximately five kilometers from the Russian border.

A strike team from the regiment’s 1st Assault Battalion, known as “Black Swan,” conducted the raid on the command post of Russia’s 30th Motor Rifle Regiment.

During the operation, Ukrainian forces killed Major Andrey Yartsev, the commander of a battalion within the 30th Motor Rifle Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces.

Documents recovered at the scene identify Yartsev as a 1974-born Latvian native who held a driver’s license issued in Saint Petersburg, where he likely resided before his deployment.

The operation follows a series of offensive actions by the 225th Regiment in the border area, including the liberation of Andriivka.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged these efforts in his recent address, commending the regiment’s role in reclaiming territory and contributing to broader stabilization efforts in Sumy region.

Russian forces expanded infiltration tactics along Ukraine’s Sumy border, deploying small assault groups backed by artillery and drone strikes, according to Ukraine’s Border Guard Service. The activity was concentrated near Basivka and Zhuravka, with recent attempts observed near Volodymyrivka and Veselivka.

Earlier, Russian Major Zaur Gurtziyev—accused of coordinating airstrikes on Mariupol during the 2022 siege — was killed in a grenade attack in Stavropol while serving as the city’s deputy mayor. Russian media reported the blast may have been a targeted act of terrorism.
