Russian Troops Expand Infiltration Tactics Along Ukraine’s Sumy Region Border

Russian troops are increasing their use of small assault groups across a wider range of directions in Ukraine’s Sumy region, LIGA.net reported on May 26, citing the State Border Guard Service.
Andrii Demchenko, the agency’s spokesperson, confirmed the development during a national television broadcast. He stated that Russian forces have been employing this tactic in the Sumy direction for some time.
“The most active area remains near the settlements of Basivka and Zhuravka,” Demchenko noted. “However, in recent days, we’ve observed attempts by the enemy to broaden the zones where they use this tactic. To the west of Zhuravka, this includes areas near the settlements of Volodymyrivka and Veselivka.”

According to the spokesperson, the tactic involves small, mobile assault units attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian positions, a method increasingly used along the northern border.
Demchenko stated that these incursions are typically preceded by artillery, drone, and air strikes aimed at weakening Ukrainian defenses.
“Primarily, the goal is to destroy the positions of Ukrainian soldiers and reduce our defensive capacity ahead of their assault operations,” he explained.
On May 23, it was reported that the Russian forces had begun using a new assault tactic that Ukrainian troops had dubbed the “triple chokehold.”
