A Moscow arbitration court has ordered Google Ireland Limited to return more than $2.1 billion to Google’s bankrupt Russian unit after finding the payments constituted unjust enrichment, according to The Moscow Times on February 17.

The outlet stated that the ruling, issued on February 16, invalidated transfers from Google’s Russian subsidiary to Google Ireland and ordered recovery of about $1.3 billion as unjust enrichment plus roughly $770 million in interest.

The court challenged payments totaling about $4.9 billion overall, but treated the remainder as compensation for services that were provided, The Moscow Times said, adding that the bankruptcy manager said any recovery would go to creditors.

Google’s Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in June 2022 and was declared insolvent in November 2023, it was reported.

The outlet said the bankruptcy manager argued the company’s financial collapse was driven by decisions higher in the corporate structure, including contract changes that reduced the subsidiary’s margin and shifted it to advance payments.

The Moscow Times also referenced separate litigation tied to blocked YouTube channels of pro-Kremlin outlets Tsargrad and RIA FAN that has produced an extremely large monetary claim under Russian court penalties.

Eventually, it was reported that a Moscow court fined Google over allegations tied to a YouTube video said to reveal information about Russian servicemen killed in Ukraine.
