Moscow Court Fines Google for Disclosing Personal Data of Russian Servicemen Killed in Ukraine

A Moscow court has found Google guilty of revealing personal data of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, according to the state-run TASS news agency on April 21.
The case revolves around a YouTube video that allegedly disclosed both the number and identities of Russian troops who died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Google was fined 3.8 million rubles (around $45,000).
In a similar case, aligning with Russia’s attempt to crackdown international technology companies, the Russian Federation has fined Google for over 2 undecillion rubles after declining to pay mounting fines related to the continued blocking of pro-Russian channels on YouTube in October, 2024.
The ruling also aligns with Vladimir Putin’s long-standing narrative that US tech companies, particularly Google, serve as geopolitical tools of Washington. In December, Putin accused the platform of being used by the Biden administration for political purposes.
Earlier, a court in Russian-occupied Donetsk had sentenced three Ukrainian prisoners of war, National Guard servicemen from the Azov Brigade, to nearly 24 years in a penal colony.
