Ukraine Strikes Major Russian TANECO Oil Refinery 1,200 Kilometers From Border

Ukrainian forces struck the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, overnight on September 13, with a fire reported at the facility located roughly 1,200 kilometers from Ukraine.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on September 13, the strike caused a fire at one of the refinery’s storage tanks. The extent of the damage is being assessed.

TANECO is one of Russia’s major oil-processing complexes and produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, marine fuel, base oils, and other petroleum products.

The refinery began operations in the early 2010s and has since significantly expanded its processing capacity. In 2022, the facility processed approximately 16.2 million tons of crude oil.

The strike was part of continued Ukrainian operations targeting facilities linked to Russia’s military and energy infrastructure.

The General Staff also reported that Ukrainian forces struck the Slavyansky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region overnight. A fire was recorded at the facility following the attack. The refinery has an annual processing capacity of approximately 5.2 million tons of crude oil and, according to the General Staff, is involved in supplying the Russian military.
