NATO Chief Asserts Ukraine’s Right to Target Russian Military Sites
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has affirmed Ukraine’s right to target legitimate military objectives within Russian territory, stating during a televised marathon:
“My position is clear: Ukraine has the right under international law to target legitimate military targets on the territory of the aggressor country, Russia. This is a war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, and Ukraine has the right to self-defense, which includes strikes on the aggressor’s territory. For me, this is absolutely clear.”
Stoltenberg elaborated that while NATO member states have varied in their restrictions on the weaponry provided to Ukraine, recent events, such as Russian military actions near Kharkiv, have prompted some allies to ease these restrictions. He further justified Ukraine’s targeting of Russian artillery and airfields located beyond the frontline, citing their close proximity to the war zone.
