US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a recent interview with journalist Megyn Kelly on January 30, stated that neither Ukraine nor Russia is likely to achieve their maximalist goals as a result of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. He emphasized that reaching peace will require substantial effort and compromise from both sides.

“The war will not end with the maximalist goals of either side,” Rubio said. “Both sides are paying a heavy price, and peace will require a lot of hard work.”

He acknowledged the challenges Ukraine faces in accepting any territorial concessions, considering the suffering caused by the Russian invasion.

“If you imagine you’re Ukrainian, and the Russians have made you suffer so much, and now you’re going to let them keep the land? I mean, people would be upset about that, you would understand it,” Rubio explained.

Rubio added that he believes the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, could play a critical role in helping to facilitate peace. However, he acknowledged that the process would be challenging and time-consuming.

Previously, it was reported that advisors to US President-elect Donald Trump are developing a comprehensive sanctions strategy aimed at resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine.
