Netherlands Allows Ukraine to Strike Russia With Dutch Weapons
The Ukrainian defense forces are allowed to strike military targets within Russian territory using weapons provided by the Netherlands, stated Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, as reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Brekelmans cited international law, which permits Ukraine to defend itself. According to the minister, international law does not impose distance limitations and does not cease to apply 100 kilometers from the border.
"Ukraine has the right to self-defense. If the country is attacked from border areas or from Russian airfields, it can target military objects. The same applies to enemy missiles—they can also be intercepted by our weapons over Russia," Brekelmans said.
The Netherlands is also open to Ukraine using F-16 fighter jets, which the country plans to deliver, to carry out strikes on Russia.
Additionally, Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans urged allies to lift restrictions on the use of weaponry provided to Ukraine for defense purposes.
The Netherlands has consistently supported Ukraine in its defense against the large-scale Russian invasion. In August, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced a new support package for Ukraine exceeding €200 million. Previously, the country allocated €60 million for drones for Ukraine and, together with Denmark, contributed €400 million for the production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles for Ukraine.
