Nicaragua’s Ortega Recognizes Occupied Ukrainian Territories as Part of Russia

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent a letter to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, offering his full support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine and recognizing the occupied Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia as part of Russia, as was reported on July 30.
Ortega framed the war as part of a broader battle against what he described as “Ukrainian neo-Nazism“—a term often used by Russia to justify its invasion of Ukraine, reports local El19 Digital news outlet.
The letter, co-signed by Ortega’s wife and Vice President Rosario Murillo, expressed solidarity with the Russian people and praised the sacrifices of Russian military families. Ortega also reiterated Nicaragua’s support for Russia’s so-called “special military operation,” which the Kremlin claims is being conducted to protect Russian citizens and defend its sovereignty.

In the letter, Ortega stated, “We express our full support and full appreciation to the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions as an integral part of the territory of the Russian Federation.” This endorsement of Russia’s territorial claims contrasts sharply with the international community’s stance, which overwhelmingly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories.
Ortega’s letter reflects key elements of Russian disinformation. The reference to “Ukrainian neo-Nazism” echoes a recurring narrative promoted by Russian state media to justify the invasion, despite Ukraine’s democratically elected government being led by President Zelenskyy, who is Jewish.
The Russian narrative about Ukraine being a haven for neo-Nazism has been debunked by international experts, who point out the country’s diverse and pluralistic society.
Ortega’s alignment with Russia in this context shows how the ongoing war against Ukraine has been used by Moscow to promote its own geopolitical interests, while some international leaders, like Ortega, continue to echo its rhetoric. This letter further reinforces Nicaragua’s position as one of Russia’s few allies in Latin America, despite widespread international condemnation of the Russian invasion and its war crimes in Ukraine.
Earlier, it was reported that a group of Russian spies lived in Brazil for years, creating fake identities to conduct espionage activities in other South American countries on behalf of the Kremlin.
