No Signs of Compromise: US Intel Says Putin Committed to Prolonging War

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia shows no signs of being ready to compromise on Ukraine, with Russian leader Vladimir Putin now “more dug in than ever,” according to a recent classified assessment shared with Congress, NBC News reported on October 28.
The analysis, cited by senior US and congressional officials, found that despite mounting troop losses and economic strain, Putin remains determined to continue the war and secure Ukrainian territory to justify the human and financial costs of his invasion.
The assessment comes as President Donald Trump’s efforts to push Moscow toward peace talks have stalled.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, Trump last week canceled a planned meeting with Putin in Budapest and imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil—the first major economic penalties of his second term, NBC News writes.

“We hope that the war will be settled,” Trump told reporters, calling the sanctions “tremendous.”
According to the report, US intelligence and European diplomats believe the combination of sanctions, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil facilities, and expanded European arms deliveries could eventually influence the Kremlin’s calculus.
However, so far Russia has stuck to its hard-line demands that would effectively disarm Ukraine, bar its NATO membership, and exclude any Western-led peacekeeping forces, according to NBC News.
Despite his campaign pledge to broker peace within 24 hours of taking office, Trump has yet to bring Moscow to the table. His tone toward Putin has shifted in recent months, moving from optimism to impatience.
“Every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don’t go anywhere,” Trump said last week.
The White House declined to comment on the intelligence report but reiterated that Washington’s goal remains “a peaceful resolution” dependent on Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith, NBC News stated.
Previously, it was reported that, speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters the US has “the greatest nuclear submarine in the world” stationed near Russia—and said Putin should end the war in Ukraine instead of testing missiles.
