North Korea Vows to Back Russia’s War Against Ukraine “No Matter What”

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his country’s support for Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine, during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in Pyongyang, North Korean state media KCNA reported on June 4.
Kim stated that North Korea “will continue to support Russia in its war against Ukraine,” and that Pyongyang will stand by Moscow on a range of other issues outlined in the strategic agreement between the two authoritarian regimes.
The visit by Shoigu comes amid deepening military cooperation between the countries, underpinned by a sweeping strategic partnership agreement signed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Kim in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024.
The pact includes provisions for military and other forms of assistance should either party come under “armed attack.”

During the recent meeting, the two sides also discussed fighting in Russia’s Kursk region, where, according to reports, North Korean soldiers have been directly involved in combat operations against Ukraine—a claim that signals Pyongyang’s increasing military commitment to aiding Moscow on the battlefield.
Back in May, Kim had already justified his country’s involvement in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, describing it as “warranted.” His latest remarks further solidify what appears to be a long-term alliance with the Kremlin.
Kim also issued a warning to the United States, stating that North Korea is prepared to use military force if Washington continues what he called “military provocations against Russia.”
Earlier, reports emerged that in exchange for artillery shells and troops, Moscow has supplied Pyongyang not only with fuel, missile technology, and air defense systems but also samples of Western-made weapons.
