North Korean troops deployed in Russia are facing significant challenges adapting to modern warfare conditions, according to Sky News on January 27.

Reports suggest that these soldiers display a reluctance to surrender, with some resorting to using grenades to take their own lives rather than being captured.

Sky News, citing Ukrainian military sources, reports that North Korean troops operating in the region have suffered severe losses.

Following their initial encounters with Ukrainian forces, the soldiers appear to have temporarily withdrawn from the front lines. According to a Ukrainian commander, known by the call sign “Pulse,” the withdrawal could be for several reasons: reassessing their tactics, tending to the wounded, or awaiting reinforcements. “I think they will return soon,” he stated.

The soldiers have reportedly demonstrated a lack of awareness regarding threats posed by drones and artillery. Their tactics, which include advancing on foot in groups of 20 to 60, make them vulnerable targets for Ukrainian forces. Additionally, radio interceptions have revealed instances of poor coordination, including accidental attacks on Russian positions by North Korean troops.

Sky News also highlights efforts by North Korean forces to conceal evidence of their presence on the battlefield. These measures include retrieving the bodies of their fallen and evacuating the wounded. Despite these efforts, their presence is marked by logistical and operational challenges, including difficulties in coordination with Russian forces.

Ukrainian military personnel noted that North Korean soldiers are equipped with superior gear compared to many Russian troops, including advanced rifles and well-made uniforms. However, their movements are largely limited to foot patrols, with golf buggies being used to transport ammunition.

Describing their appearance, Commander “Pulse” remarked, “They were impeccably groomed, like models. Not one of them had facial hair, unkempt hair, or bald spots. It was difficult to estimate their ages, but they seemed to be between 25 and 40 years old.”

Earlier, reports from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service revealed that North Korean troops stationed in Russia’s Kursk region were ordered to commit suicide rather than risk capture by Ukrainian forces.
