Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed details about captured Chinese soldiers during a joint press conference with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Kyiv on April 8.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian soldiers engaged in combat with six Chinese military personnel in the Donetsk region, within the settlements of Tarasivka and Bilohorivka. As a result, two Chinese citizens were taken captive.

The president pointed out an important distinction between the involvement of North Korean and Chinese soldiers in the war against Ukraine, emphasizing that while North Koreans were present in the Kursk region, the Chinese were already directly on Ukrainian territory.

“We have their documents, passports, and even credit cards. These are Chinese citizens. I believe this is a very important element. I think the United States should pay more attention to what is happening today. We expect further developments,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy noted that this is yet another country after Iran and the military forces of North Korea on Russia’s side.

“We greatly hope that after this situation, the Americans will engage more with the Ukrainians, and then with the Russians. I also hope that the Chinese side will comment. I have instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to contact their Chinese counterparts to demand an explanation for their actions,” Zelenskyy added.

On March 28, the UK Defense Intelligence reported that North Korean forces have sustained heavy casualties in Russia’s war in Ukraine, with over 5,000 troops killed or injured in the Kursk region.
