China denied a German media report published on March 24 that suggested discussions about its possible participation in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

“The report is not true at all. China’s stance on the Ukraine crisis (sic) is consistent and clear,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing, according to a transcript of his news conference.

Guo was responding to a report from the German outlet Welt am Sonntag, which claimed that Chinese diplomats had discussed the potential for China’s involvement in peacekeeping forces during talks in Brussels.

The spokesman also noted that the “Group of Friends for Peace” on the war against Ukraine recently held a meeting in New York, where participants discussed the latest developments and prospects for achieving lasting peace. The meeting was “highly successful,” Guo said, reaffirming the group’s commitment to resolving the war through “a negotiated political solution and diplomatic means.”

“Members of the Group stressed that the conflict might be approaching a turning point and welcomed recent dynamics toward peace talks. They urged all stakeholders to play a constructive role, find a just and lasting solution — one that addresses concerns of the parties to the conflict and leads to a peace agreement acceptable to them,” Guo added.

The “Group of Friends for Peace” was launched by China and Brazil ahead of US President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025 to unite the Global South and foster conditions for peace talks.

Earlier, high-level US and Russian delegations held closed-door negotiations at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Saudi state security barring journalists from the premises.
