Poland Uncovers Russian Group Allegedly Plotting to Influence Elections Through Disinformation
Poland has uncovered a Russian group assigned to influence its elections by spreading disinformation and fostering instability, Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski announced on January 10, according to Reuters.
"In recent days, a Russian group has been identified, another one that was inspired and prepared by the Russian military intelligence GRU, whose goal is to influence the Polish elections," Gawkowski said on Polish television channel TVN24.
Gawkowski offered no further details, stating only that the group's activities involved "spreading disinformation, false information" and "recruiting people who ... would destroy the coherence of the political scene in Poland." He also noted that while it was a Russian group, "it can recruit various people."
The official stated that Poland’s security services are very efficient in protecting the country.
"Russia is waging cyberwar on Poland. We are the most attacked country in the European Union, and the elections are to be a test of whether Polish democracy will survive," he added.
Previously, on October 22, Poland officially announced the closure of the Russian Consulate in Poznań, declaring its personnel persona non grata, citing security threats from Moscow’s ongoing hybrid warfare.
