Poland Weighs Buying Stake in Major Ukrainian State Bank to Aid Ukrainian Financial Reconstruction

Poland is preparing to take a stake in a major Ukrainian bank as Warsaw positions itself for a leading role in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, WP Wiadomości reported on February 6.
According to the outlet, Polish authorities are considering acquiring shares in state-controlled Oschadbank or Ukreximbank in Ukraine, a move that would provide financial backing and institutional support for Polish companies expected to take part in rebuilding Ukraine.

Poland’s largest lender, PKO BP, already holds a stake in Kredobank, which operates in western Ukraine.
WP Wiadomości also reported that it is almost certain this year’s international conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction will be held in Warsaw this spring, following last year’s gathering in Rome.
Ukrainian officials had previously floated Vienna or Paris as possible hosts, but Polish sources cited by the outlet said the decision is now effectively settled.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk travelled to Kyiv on February 5 alongside Polish Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański, who is overseeing preparations for the reconstruction conference, WP Wiadomości wrote.
Ahead of the visit, Tusk said Poland wants to be directly involved in what he described as a future “grand plan” of major investments and large-scale rebuilding efforts.
The report notes that while Warsaw has strongly backed EU financial support for Ukraine and expanded military assistance, Polish businesses remain cautious about operating deeper inside Ukraine while the war continues, limiting concrete progress on earlier reconstruction initiatives.
Previously, it was reported that Poland had delivered its 47th military aid package to Ukraine, which primarily consisted of 155mm caliber ammunition, and is now preparing the 48th package, which will include armored vehicles and around $214 million.
