“He breached their security to gain access to databases. He has been taken into custody,” the minister stated.

According to Polish outlet RMF24, officers from the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime detained the suspect on November 16. Investigators found that he had illegally entered Poland in 2022 and received refugee status the following year.

Prosecutors allege he exploited vulnerabilities in the information systems of online retailers to break in and access stored databases.

Authorities in Kraków also believe his activities may be linked to other cyberattacks targeting companies in Poland and elsewhere in the EU. An assessment of the damages is ongoing.

The suspect has been interrogated and formally charged, and a court has ordered him to remain in custody for three months.

Additionally, Russia has been using cryptocurrencies to compensate saboteurs carrying out hybrid operations across the European Union, allowing Moscow to obscure financial flows from Western intelligence services, Poland’s national security bureau chief Sławomir Cenckiewicz told the Financial Times.

Cenckiewicz said digital currencies were likely being used to fund a recent wave of hostile activities—from drone incursions to acts of sabotage and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, including water systems. He also noted that intelligence shared with European partners suggests Russia’s so-called shadow fleet has been involved in launching drones into EU airspace.

Earlier, the United States introduced new sanctions targeting a network of Russian and foreign IT firms, along with several Russian citizens, for their alleged roles in cyberattacks and attempts to evade existing sanctions.
