Pope Francis made a direct appeal to political leaders and the international community, urging them to establish ceasefires all around the world ahead of Christmas, Vatican News reported on December 8.

“I appeal to Governments and the International Community, that a ceasefire may be reached on all war fronts by the Christmas celebrations,” he said.

Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City on Sunday, the pontiff emphasized the need for global efforts to end suffering caused by war and violence.

“Let us continue to pray for peace in suffering Ukraine, the Middle East—Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, and now also Syria—Myanmar, South Sudan, and everywhere people suffer from war and violence. I appeal to leaders and the international community to ensure we arrive at Christmas with a ceasefire on all war fronts,” added Pope Francis.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pope Francis at the Vatican, presenting the pontiff with a painting influenced by the Bucha massacre.
