Pope Leo XIV Urges Ukraine Ceasefire, Says It’s Time to Silence the Guns

Pope Leo XIV has once again appealed for an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine, urging all sides to halt hostilities and commit to dialogue.
Speaking at the conclusion of his Sunday prayer on August 31, the pontiff dedicated his message to those affected by the recent large-scale Russian airstrikes across Ukraine.
According to Vatican News, the pope expressed his closeness to Ukrainians who continue to suffer from attacks, including strikes that hit Kyiv and other cities in recent days. “Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine continues to bring death and destruction.
These days, too, airstrikes have struck various cities, including the capital Kyiv, causing numerous casualties. I renew my closeness to the Ukrainian people and to all affected families,” Pope Leo said.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and a serious commitment to dialogue, stressing that the international community should support a shift away from the “logic of arms” toward negotiations.
“I repeat my firm appeal for an immediate ceasefire and genuine engagement in dialogue. The time has come for those responsible to renounce the path of weapons and choose the path of negotiations and peace with the support of the international community. The voice of arms must fall silent, while the voice of fraternity and justice must rise,” he stated.
The pope also reminded the faithful that September 1 will mark the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, calling attention to broader themes of peace and stewardship.
Earlier, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Vatican’s readiness to host peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, following his call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
