Pope Leo XIV Calls for End to War After Russian Massive Attacks on Ukrainian Cities

Pope Leo XIV, head of the Roman Catholic Church, called for an end to the war in Ukraine in a message posted on platform X on May 28. The pontiff was responding to Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
The people of Ukraine have been struck by fresh, serious attacks. I assure my prayers for all the victims, especially children and their families. I strongly reiterate my appeal to end the war and to support every initiative for dialogue and peace. Let us #PrayTogether for peace…

For three consecutive days, Russian forces launched intense aerial assaults on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine’s Air Force reported Russia deploying an unprecedented 995 aerial attack weapons during the period, including Shahed drones and missiles.
On May 20, Pope Leo XIV has confirmed the Vatican’s readiness to host the next round of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. The offer was made following a phone call between the Pope and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who had earlier spoken with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders.
In respond, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the idea of holding Ukraine-Russia negotiations at the Vatican as unrealistic, adding that no date or location for talks has been agreed upon.
“I’d advise against wasting brainpower on scenarios that aren’t particularly realistic. Just imagine the Vatican as a venue, it’s not exactly elegant,” he said.
