“Putin Always Betrays Those Who Rely on Him,” Ukrainian MFA Responds to the Fall of Russia-Backed Assad Regime in Syria
Ukraine has officially commented on the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, emphasizing the importance of regional stability and expressing readiness to rebuild relations with Syria in the future.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the downfall of Assad underscores a pattern of betrayal associated with authoritarian regimes relying on external support. Speaking on X (Twitter), Sybiha stated, “Assad has fallen. This is how it has always been and will always be for dictators who bet on Putin. He always betrays those who rely on him. The main goal now is to restore security in Syria and effectively protect its people from violence.”
Sybiha stressed the need to stabilize the region and foster political dialogue in Syria to maintain the functionality of state institutions. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to explore pathways for re-establishing diplomatic relations with Syria while reiterating Ukraine’s support for the Syrian people.
Earlier, Syrian rebels announced the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime following the capture of Damascus, marking the end of over two decades of authoritarian rule. Rebel forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), swiftly seized key strongholds, prompting Assad to flee to an undisclosed location.
