“Putin Is Playing Games”: US Senate Prepares Crushing 500% Tariff on Russian Energy Buyers

US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham have stated that they have already introduced a bill proposing new sanctions on Russia, including a 500% tariff on imported goods from countries that purchase Russian energy resources.
The bipartisan statement was published on the website of Democratic Senator Blumenthal on May 21.
Blumenthal, a Democrat, and Graham, a Republican, say the bill has the support of 81 senators. They specify that the proposed 500% tariff would apply to countries importing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products.

“While we yearn for peace, it is increasingly clear to us – and a supermajority of the Senate – that Putin is playing games. The United States Senate stands ready to act if these games continue,” the statement on Blumenthal’s website read.
On May 20, Graham stated that the US Senate is prepared to vote on a sanctions bill targeting Russia if peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine fail to make progress soon.
On the same day, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas noted that the only way to compel Russia to engage in meaningful negotiations over a ceasefire in its war is to ramp up pressure.
