Russian leader Vladimir Putin has ordered the military to continue its offensive toward Zaporizhzhia and to expand a so-called “buffer zone” along Ukraine’s northern border, The Moscow Times reported on December 29.

Speaking during a meeting with military commanders, Putin instructed Russian forces to press ahead with operations aimed at capturing the city of Zaporizhzhia.

“Of course, in the near future it is necessary to continue the offensive together with the ‘East’ group to liberate Zaporizhzhia,” Putin said after a briefing by Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky, commander of the Dnipro grouping, The Moscow Times wrote.

Putin also ordered continued efforts in 2026 to establish a “security zone” in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions along the Russian border. He has issued similar directives to the military in November and May.

The instructions came shortly after US President Donald Trump said he believed Moscow was interested in ending the war in Ukraine, according to The Moscow Times.

Previously, it was reported that Vladimir Putin had signed a law that effectively allows Russia to disregard rulings by foreign and international courts in criminal cases conducted without Moscow’s participation.
