The UK Royal Navy has intercepted two Russian naval vessels moving along Britain’s coastline, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed, according to The Telegraph on November 23.

According to the MoD, the offshore patrol ship HMS Severn shadowed the Russian corvette Stoikiy and the tanker Elnya for nearly two weeks as they transited through the Dover Strait and continued west into the Channel.

After the escort reached the coast of Brittany, monitoring duties were handed off to an unnamed NATO partner, with HMS Severn continuing distant surveillance in case of unexpected maneuvers.

British officials did not provide a precise date for the interception, describing it as part of a “round-the-clock shadowing operation” conducted jointly with NATO allies.

The deployment follows an uptick in Russian naval activity in northern European waters. Defense Secretary John Healey said last week that traffic from Russian naval vessels near the UK had increased by 30% over the past two years.

Earlier, the British MoD recently sent three P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to Iceland as part of a broader NATO mission tracking Russian submarines and surface ships in the North Atlantic and Arctic.
